OhioEPA Data confirms Ra-226 leaking from the Plant (45.2 KB)
The new OhioEPA report, "Biological and Water Quality Study of the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant Streams," dated November 17, 2006, provides an answer to a long-standing question of public concern: Is Radium-226 (Ra-226) leaking out of the Plant? The answer is Yes: OhioEPA data confirms Ra-226 leaking from the Plant. That confirmation is 5.93 pCi/L of gross alpha radioactivity in creek water in West Ditch at RM 1.2.

Uranium-233 in the Hanford Reach Riverbed (1.51 MB)
Since 1999, TRAC has surveyed artificial radioactivity in the sediments under the Hanford Reach of the Columbia River. Based on TRAC's accumulating evidence of uranium-233 waste in the riverbed, the Washington State Ecology Department jointly sampled riverbed sediments with TRAC on Sept. 23, 2004. TRAC reviewed Ecology's data and confirmed uranium-233 waste in the sediment samples. This report outlines the sampling process, laboratory data, and TRAC's review.

Radium-226 in Creek Foam/Water from the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (849 KB)
Citizen activists collected foam and water flowing from the Portsmouth, Ohio Gaseous Diffusion Plant in November 2003. They identified radioactivity in the sample at 100 times the normal background level, using simple Geiger counter methods. That elevated radioactivity was confirmed by the United States Enrichment Corporation. TRAC has identified the radioactive source as radium-226.

State Hopes to Unravel Radiation Readings near Piketon (62.6 KB)
This Columbus Dispatch article is based on radiological findings discovered by using simple monitoring methods outlined in "A Citizen's Guide to Monitor Radioactivity."

Report: A Citizen's Guide to Monitor Radioactivity
(3.04 MB)
This Guide provides step-by-step explanation for average citizens to use a Geiger counter and off the shelf samples to measure radioactivity around nuclear facilities in their community. The Guide was produced under contract to ISAR: Resources for Environmental Activists.

Report claims new radioactive sources around ORR
The RadioActivist Campaign, a California-based organization that conducts radiological surveys of nuclear facilities, has released a report stating it found radioactivity around the Oak Ridge Reservation "associated with a deficiency of official monitoring."

This Oak Ridger article, published May 27th, provides an overview of TRAC's radiological study at Oak Ridge.

New Radioactive sources found in OR, activists say: TDEC, Y-12 refute findings of group (72.2 KB)
An activist group said it had identified some new sources of radioactivity in the Oak Ridge environment and suggested official monitoring had become lax...

This article, by Frank Munger of the Knoxville News Sentinel, covers TRAC's radiological study around the Oak Ridge Reservation and presents the government's rebuttal.

Report: Radioactive Pathways --Oak Ridge, Tennessee (641 KB)
In November 2004, TRAC's conducted a reconnaissance survey around the Oak Ridge Reservation. This final report outlines the radiological results and their implications, including evidence that wastes from a new generation of nuclear production is already contaminating local ground and surface water. Report: Radioactive Bioaccumulation in Clams along the Hanford Reach (523 KB)
In September 2004, TRAC began a radiological study of Hanford's impact on riverbed water and Asian clams at six locations along the Hanford Reach. This study is the first report of radioactive radium from Hanford's 300 Area contaminating aquatic biota in the Columbia River. Click here for more...

Data Report of a radiological Study Around the Oak Ridge Reservation, Tennessee in November 2004 (79.7 KB)
The RadioActivist Campaign responded to citizen concerns by conducting independent sampling around the Oak Ridge Reservation in November 2004. This data report presents the analytical results of that study, including preliminary comments.

Report: Radioactive Neighbor: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (702 KB)
Between December 2003 and May 2004, TRAC conducted a radiological survey around the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Initial sampling identified previously unreported radioactivity contaminating the local environment. Follow-up sampling found that radioactivity had almost disappeared. This evidence suggests independent monitoring can help prevent radioactive releases. Click here for more...
