TRAC Awarded Funding for Oak Ridge Study (September 14, 2004)

The RadioActivist Campaign is pleased to announce it has been awarded funding for a radiological survey around the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in Tennessee. The award, from The Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund, will cover about 90% of TRAC’s project costs. The RadioActivist Campaign hopes to secure the remaining 10% from individual donations.

TRAC will survey the Oak Ridge National Laboratory later this autumn. The Oak Ridge Laboratory is a key facility in the United States’ new nuclear weapons complex.

TRAC’s study will collect environmental samples from downwind and downstream of the Laboratory to identify radioactivity entering public lands and waters. TRAC will use its survey results to raise awareness of the Laboratory’s radiological impact on the nearby communities and environment. TRAC plans to collaborate with local public-interest and grassroots organizations to inform, empower, and organize local residents to gain a voice in setting the Laboratory’s priorities. TRAC plans to conduct a community meeting to discuss its radiological findings and implications with area residents, in early 2005.

TRAC seeks $3,000 from individual donors to help support this project. Contribute to this project with a secure on-line donation here. Or send a check, payable to "TRAC/Tides Project 207," to 7312 N.E. North Shore Rd., Belfair, WA 98528.
